Bulky waste items
Our contractors, Biffa, provide a chargeable bulky waste collection service. This can be used for getting rid of large household items which can't be disposed of with your household collections. You’ll find the price for specific items listed below.
You can book and pay for a collection by calling Biffa directly on 01962 670 706. Collections are on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in the Winchester district - subject to availability.
If your item is in good condition, it may be useful to someone else. For furniture, try using the Smart Living Reuse Directory to find a furniture reuse charity near you: www.hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/smartliving/inthehome/reusesites Other items in good condition can be listed on Freecycle.
You can also dispose of large bulky items yourself at a Hampshire County Council Household Waste Recycling Centre.

About bulky waste collections
Bulky waste collections can be booked with extra measures in place to keep you and our contractor team safe.
Please bear the following in mind when you book your collection:
- Collections take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays
- Our contractor, Biffa, is not currently able to enter your property to remove items
- Please leave the item for collection inside your property boundary but where we can easily collect it
Call 01962 670706 to book your collection.
New regulations came into force in 2023 relating to persistent organic pollutants, which are commonly found in upholstered seating, and other furnishings.
These include:
- upholstered sofas
- upholstered chairs, including dining chairs, office chairs
- upholstered armchairs, including those with an electric motor
- upholstered stools
- beanbags
- floor and sofa cushions
These can still be collected as part of the bulky waste service, but need to kept separate from collection of other bulky waste materials.
To reduce the risk to the environment, any upholstered furniture which has been split or damaged, should be sealed with tape or plastic before collection. Otherwise, our crews will be unable to collect the items, and another chargeable collection will need to be booked.
If BIFFA are unable to make a collection due to an upholstered item being damaged and not able to be taped up or bagged, then a wasted journey charge of £15 may be applied.

How to ensure your waste is disposed of correctly
If you choose to have your waste disposed of through a private company or operator instead, then please ensure you follow the SCRAP process below
All Householders have a duty of care to dispose of their waste correctly, this includes checking that any companies or individuals that are contracted to dispose of the waste are registered with a Waste Carriers License and that the householder receives a copy of the Waste Transfer Note.
- Suspect all waste carriers and request proof of registration
- Check that the waste carrier is registered on the Environment Agency's website
- Refuse any unexpected offers to have your rubbish taken away
- Ask how your rubbish will be disposed of and seek evidence of this
- Paperwork must be obtained including a proper invoice, waste transfer note or receipt, including a description of the waste being removed and the waste carrier's contact details
