Hackney Carriage Driver's Licences

A licence is required before any person can drive a hackney carriage (taxi). A Hackney Carriage is defined as a licensed vehicle that can ply for hire on authorised taxi ranks and can be flagged down in the street.
Before a licence is granted the applicant must satisfy the Council that:

  • they are a fit and proper person to hold a licence;
  • they are medically fit;
  • they have attained the age of 21 years;
  • they have held a full driver's licence (not a provisional licence) granted to the applicant under Part III of the Road Traffic Act 1972 authorising them to drive a motor car for at least twelve months prior to the date of the application;
  • they can demonstrate adequate knowledge of the local area;
  • they have the right to work in the UK.
