Grounds maintenance – what we do
Our grounds maintenance contractor cares for a wide range of public spaces across the district, helping to keep them safe, attractive and enjoyable for everyone. This includes mowing grass, maintaining shrub beds and hedges, managing weeds, caring for roses, and maintaining our sports pitches and recreation areas.
The service supports biodiversity through the management of wildlife habitats, wildflowers, and other environmentally important areas, balancing the needs of nature with those of residents and visitors. Through planned maintenance and regular inspections, we work to ensure our green spaces remain welcoming throughout the year.
Street cleansing – what we do
Our street cleansing contractor maintains the cleanliness of streets, footpaths, car parks and other public spaces. The service includes routine litter picking, emptying litter and dog waste bins, sweeping roads and pavements, and responding to reports of fly-tipping and other environmental issues.
Regular cleansing programmes throughout the district are supported by targeted work in busy town centres, such as the work we do with the Winchester Business Improvement District (Winchester BID) in the centre of Winchester City. They help us by arranging a deep clean of the city centre every year before the Summer which includes the removal of chewing gum from the pavements and helps to keep our very busy areas clean and tidy for residents, visitors, and businesses to enjoy.
When are services happening in my neighbourhood?
To see when services are planned in your area, use the document links on the right of this page. You can also explore our Grounds and Street Cleansing Map, which allows you to select individual services from both grounds maintenance and streetcare activities and view them on an interactive map of the district.
Local litter champions
Could you organise a street or neighbourhood litter-picking event? Or perhaps act as the 'eyes and ears' of your community if your area suffers from fly-tipping?
We will provide equipment, training and support, and take away the rubbish you collect. Studies show that when people take an active interest in their neighbourhood it is the best way to deter anti-social behaviour. Please come forward and contact us if you'd like to make a difference and look at the websites below for ideas.
Littering is an offence - report it!
Our Community Neighbourhood Services hold regular Big Clean Ups across the district. Please see their web pages to find out how you can get involved. If there is glass on pavements or roads, or if the litter is likely to cause a hazard to pedestrians, removal can be arranged outside normal working hours:
- Telephone: 0300 300 0013 (during office hours)
