Local businesses invited to apply for City Council carbon assessments and Green Business Grants
Winchester businesses have the opportunity of a package of support for becoming more sustainable, including a free carbon assessment undertaken by Winchester-based environmental consultants Arthian. This will identify ways in which they can reduce their environmental impact and energy costs.
Winchester City Council is providing free carbon assessments to support businesses across the district reduce their carbon emissions and saving them money at the same time. Businesses that take part will then be able to use their carbon reduction plan as supporting information when applying for funding from Winchester City Council’s Green Business Grant scheme.
A Green Business Grant is designed to help businesses reduce their energy consumption and transport costs and switch to renewable energy. The grant can cover up to 50% of the project costs, amounting to between £2,000 and £5,000. To apply, they must have undertaken an independent energy or carbon assessment that recommends their proposed project, either via the council’s own programme or by another qualified assessor. Companies that have previously received a Green Business Grant include Rushmere Farm in Hambledon and Micheldever Village Store, where solar PV were installed.
Councillor Lucille Thompson, Cabinet Member for Business and Culture said: “The combination of a carbon assessment to identify easy, achievable actions to reduce carbon emissions and a Green Business Grant to help fund those actions, provides businesses with a package of support to help them become more sustainable. This aligns with the council’s ambition of carbon neutrality across Winchester district by 2030.”
Businesses who would like to have a free carbon assessment or apply for a Green Business Grant, should contact Winchester City Council’s Economy team at ecodev@winchester.gov.uk - by 28 February 2026 to request a free assessment and by 28 November 2025 to apply for the grant.
