Winchester City Council completes acquisition of 146 new homes at Kings Barton
Winchester City Council has completed the purchase 146 new affordable homes at Cala Homes’ Kings Barton development, marking another step forward in the council’s plans to provide 1000 new homes in the district by 2032.
The new homes will help to meet demand for affordable housing in the district, with a mixture of property types and sizes that will be available through either shared ownership or affordable rent.
The new homes make up part of the 800 affordable properties within Cala Homes’ plan for the site, which comprises a total of 2000 new homes as well as community facilities including a nursery, community hall, food store, pub and public open space.
The homes themselves are being built to Building Regulation energy efficiency standards which will help cut the homes’ carbon emissions, with the city council also specifying the inclusion of air source heat pumps on each of the properties.
Speaking about the purchase, Leader of Winchester City Council Cllr Martin Tod said:
“It was great to visit Kings Barton and see Cala's progress first-hand. It was particularly good to see the first of the 146 new affordable homes bought by the City Council - and the way Cala are building them using new technology to cut carbon and cut bills.
“They look great and mark a great step towards our target of providing 1,000 new homes across the district by 2032 – and I have no doubt they’ll make really nice homes for their future residents.
“We also had a good walk around the site and discussion about the infrastructure that's so vital to all new development. The development isn't just about the attractive and sustainable homes that are being built: the new facilities that are being planned will make a real difference for residents locally and across the city."
Sam Thixton, Area Land Director at Cala Southern, said:
“We are proud to have worked alongside Winchester City Council to continue providing affordable homes for residents. The team at the Council has been a pleasure to work with, and we are pleased to have reached an agreement that will deliver high-quality, sustainable, and affordable homes that meet local housing needs in Winchester.”
