Welcome to Winchester! Winchester City Council’s guide for Ukrainian guests and their hosts - now available in Ukrainian, Russian and English

Winchester City Council has begun distributing three editions of a Welcome Guide for Ukrainian guests and their hosts at the second in a series of Community Hub events at the Guildhall.

The guides include information about life in the Winchester district and offer advice on currency, food prices, benefits, finding work and accessing specialised support services.

The publications were popular with the guests attending the second hub event in the Guildhall – 98 families have now attended with their hosts to get confidential advice, guidance and support on housing, employment opportunities, information about benefits and financial aid initiatives as well as more general support.

Cllr Paula Ferguson, Deputy Leader of Winchester City Council and Cabinet Member for Community said,

“I am so pleased to see how well these publications have been received today by both our guests and hosts. We know this is a very difficult time for everyone, and providing the translated welcome guide is a small but important thing we can do to help.

I can only imagine how traumatic it must be to lose your home and livelihood almost overnight because your country has been invaded, and it’s clear that many of our guests are extremely concerned about the family members and friends they’ve left behind. Our aim therefore is to make sure they receive the warmest welcome here in Winchester and that we offer as much support as we can to help them take the first steps to rebuilding their lives with us.

I am very grateful to all the organisations who have attended the sessions so far and also to Winnall Tesco and Costa Coffee who kindly provided refreshments for our guests.”

The next hub will be held between 10-2pm on Tuesday 21 June in the Courtyard Room at Winchester Guildhall, access will be available via the Visitor Information Centre on the High Street.
