Highcliffe residents to benefit from changes to on-street parking

Changes to on-street parking for the Highcliffe area of Winchester will be introduced in response to residents’ concerns.

The current residents’ parking permit scheme covering St Catherine’s Road, Canute Road, Milland Road, Portal Road, Vale Road, Dell Road (including the currently uncontrolled section) and Highcliffe Road will be extended to cover seven days a week, and evenings until 10pm.

A new controlled parking zone that will restrict parking to residents only will be introduced for part of Gordon Road and Fivefields Road; and for the full length of Nelson Road and St Leonards Road. A new controlled parking zone will also be introduced for Petersfield Road and Chalk Ridge restricting parking to two hours except for resident permit holders.

This comes after the council consulted local residents last year following concerns about the high levels of non-residents parking in the area.

A Traffic Regulation Order is now being progressed to deliver these changes in the coming months.

Winchester City Council Cabinet Member for Service Quality and Transformation, Cllr Martin Tod, said:

"Parking is a big concern for people living in Highcliffe, although opinions are quite divided depending on where you live.  Some parts are put under very heavy pressure from people parking who don't live in the area – and there's no need for this because alternatives are easily available at nearby Park & Rides.

"We read people's submissions, attended local meetings and heard what local people had to say. We've decided on a package of measures that does the most we can to reflect that input - but we will keep listening. Parking patterns do change when new schemes are introduced, and we will keep the situation under review."
