Council working with Biffa to address issues with bin collections

Winchester City Council is working closely with its waste contractor Biffa UK to address problems with bin collections across the district.

Cllr Lucille Thompson, Leader of the city council, and Cllr Lynda Murphy, Cabinet Member for environment, met with the Managing Director of Biffa’s municipal division, Roger Edwards, to discuss missed collections in some areas in the Winchester district.

Cllr Thompson has expressed her concern that a poor service is being provided and received details of the measures Biffa are taking to improve the consistency of service.

Cllr Thompson said:

“I share the frustrations of our residents who have been affected by waste collection delays in the district.

“This level of missed bins is unacceptable and the level of service provided for some residents is below the standards we expect. I made our concerns very clear to Mr Edwards and was pleased to hear that he is taking the matter seriously and has implemented a number of measures to ensure that there will be a consistent improvement.

"We value the people who work on the contract and they must have the tools they need to get the job done. We will continue to monitor performance very closely.”

Mr Edwards said:

"We recognise that there have been some service challenges in parts of Winchester and would like to offer our apologies to the residents affected.

“We have taken the council's feedback from our meeting seriously and recognise there is a need for improvement in the area. To address this, we are taking steps including drafting in additional vehicles and staff to ensure a consistent service going forward."
