New temporary home for Winchester Amateur Boxing Club

Winchester Amateur Boxing Club, which currently uses a building on the Garrison Grounds, will relocate to a vacant Winchester City Council-owned building close to the ‘Biffa Site’ in Bar End Close this summer.

The premises are being prepared by Winchester City Council to ensure that the popular club can continue to meet until new, purpose built facilities are available.

The move will allow ground preparation work to take place at the Garrison Ground later this year as part of the programme of development leading up to the building of a new Sport & Leisure Centre.

Cllr Lisa Griffiths, the council’s portfolio holder for health & wellbeing said:

“Winchester Amateur Boxing Club is a well attended club which plays an important role in the local community. As a cabinet we are focused on creating opportunities for all so I was obviously keen support this local organisation, recognising that the team there works really hard to make boxing an inclusive sport.  Indeed, they have received the Mayor of Winchester’s Community Award for the contribution the club makes towards the wellbeing of so many.

I’m delighted we have found suitable premises for the club so quickly. It’s a bonus that it’s just a few hundred yards away from the old pavilion - current and future members will have no trouble in finding the new premises.

The Park & Ride at Bar End will also continue to be a good transport link for members which provides free parking in the evenings and on Sundays.”

Filip Duda, Head Coach of Winchester Area Boxing Club added:

“I would like to say a big thank you to Winchester City Council for finding us temporary accommodation that will suit the needs of our members, being supportive and open to suggestions."

The future of the pavilion will be tabled to form part of the consultation on the King George V playing fields. This consultation programme begins on 17 July in All Saints Church, Petersfield Road, Highcliffe with a drop-in session - the first in a series of engagement events. It takes place between 3pm-7pm and is an opportunity for the community to talk about their ideas and to share the latest thoughts on open space in Highcliffe.
