Business opportunity to be Carbon Smart Winchester-certified

Winchester-based businesses now have an opportunity to be a certified Carbon Smart enterprise and improve their green credentials.

Winchester City Council has commissioned Carbon Smart to deliver a further year of the successful green business certification programme. Last year over 100 businesses from across the Winchester District signed up to the scheme.

Businesses will receive support from the Carbon Smart team to assess their energy bills, waste disposal and water-use to establish whether they are worthy of an award. Those who have received a blue, entry-level award in the past will also be able to celebrate improvements they have made, and reach for a coveted silver or even a gold award.

Starting at just £60 for a small business of up to 10 employees, the scheme is an affordable way to identify best practice, have your carbon footprint calculated, and find new environmentally friendly ways to work which improve the bottom line, too. Green business makes sound sense financially, as well as being good for the environment. Not only does it help businesses to reduce their annual fuel bills, but it also ensures that their business is well-placed to appeal to the increasingly ‘green savvy’ customer.

Cllr Frank Pearson, Leader of Winchester City Council, is keen to boost sustainable business practices. He said:

Winchester City Council is encouraging businesses to think green for their own immediate benefit, and for their legacy for future generations. We have a low carbon route map which guides our own practices, and we want our business community to do their bit to maintain Winchester District as an excellent place to live, work and visit.

Winchester City Council supports the Sustainable Business Network run by Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, and sponsors the green business award category of the Winchester Business Excellence awards. The Council is also working with Winchester Action on Climate Change to deliver The Great Waste project, campaign to reduce waste going to landfill.
Ben Murray, Managing Director at Carbon Smart, said:

Carbon Smart are delighted to be supporting Winchester businesses to improve their sustainability performance for a third year. We’ve seen a lot of local businesses make significant improvements to their environmental performance and use the credentials of the Carbon Smart Winchester certification to get ahead in their business ventures. Carbon Smart Certification is for all businesses however big or small. We have certified over 1000 businesses across the UK who demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability and a track record of continual improvement.
