Elections 2014

European Parliamentary Elections will be held on Thursday 22 May 2014. One-third of the Winchester City Council seats (19) and 19 Parish Councils are also up for election.

Local elections are usually held on the first Thursday in May but, for voter convenience and to save money, all the elections are being held on 22 May in 2014. The voting hours are 7am until 10pm.

Have you registered to vote? Don’t leave it too late

With the European and Local Elections coming up on 22 May the City Council is reminding people to register to vote in time.

To vote, people will need to be on the Register of Electors for their address by Tuesday 6 May 2014. Most people will already be registered, because they completed a form last winter. Residents who have moved to the District more recently and cannot recall completing a form should contact the Electoral Services Unit on 01962 848129 or ereg@winchester.gov.uk

For a postal vote or to change postal vote details, people should apply before 5pm Wednesday 7 May 2014. People with a postal vote cannot vote at the polling station.

To register, or to apply for a postal vote, people should complete and return a Voter Registration Form or postal vote application form which is available to print off on the City Council’s website www.winchester.gov.uk/elections

Advice for students

With European and Local Elections coming up on 22 May the City Council is keen to help students understand the electoral process and register to vote in time.

For most students, it will be their first opportunity to take part in the electoral process and some may not realise that they need to register to appear on the electoral register.

In most cases, students can register to vote both at home and at their term-time address. Providing they live and study in two separate local government areas, students can vote in local elections in both areas. However, they can only vote once in the European Parliamentary Election.

To register, students should complete and return a Voter Registration Form which is available to print off on the City Council’s website www.winchester.gov.uk/elections

The electoral register is updated monthly, but applications need to be made several weeks in advance to guarantee inclusion. The latest date for registering to vote in time for elections held in May is Tuesday 6 May 2014.

For more information about registering to vote and a full list of all the registration deadlines for 2014, visit the City Council’s website at www.winchester.gov.uk
