River Park Leisure Centre – Refurbishment Works Complete

Refurbishment works at River Park Leisure Centre are now complete. As well as the new gym changing rooms which have been funded by leisure centre operator DC Leisure, Winchester City Council have just completed some essential behind the scenes work to ensure that the centre is in good working order.

Gym usage and memberships at the leisure centre have increased to a level whereby the changing facilities struggled to cope with the demands placed upon them. Works to the new changing rooms commenced in June 2011 and have been recently re-opened to the public. The re-modelling of this area has created a more spacious and user friendly layout offering a fresh and modern changing environment for users.

The behind the scenes work involved some rewiring of the centre and repairs to the roof as well as some improvement to the tiling surrounding the pool area. In addition to this Winchester City Council has received a grant from the Amateur Swimming Association to install new starting blocks and turning boards to the main pool to benefit competition swimming.

Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport, comments ‘This is a perfect example of how Winchester City Council works in partnership with our operators, DC Leisure to keep the River Park Leisure Centre up to date and fit for purpose. I hope that customers enjoy the experience of the new changing facilities and appreciate that the electrical and mechanical works funded by the City Council are essential to keep the centre running efficiently and effectively.’

Disruption to River Park Leisure Centre users has been minimal throughout the refurbishment as much of the work has been behind the scenes and other changing facilities are available on site for gym users. Later in the year, the Leisure Centre will also be replacing most of the cardio vascular gym equipment and spinning bikes.

Sarah Morgan, River Park Leisure Centre General Manager, said ' This is an exciting time for River Park Leisure Centre, the new gym changing room development is long overdue and will add a new dimension to the gym facilities.  DC Leisure will also be replacing the air conditioning in the gym as well as replacing the CV equipment later this year. I am sure the members will be very pleased with the transformation and welcome these changes.’
