Tragic Death of City Councillor

Cllr Sue Fitzgerald sadly died suddenly at the weekend. Sue, 52, was elected to the Council as a Liberal Democrat councillor for Wickham and Knowle in May this year and had already stood out as an energetic and enthusiastic member of the Council who had thrown herself wholeheartedly into helping local residents and shown enormous commitment to the Council’s work.

Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Cllr Therese Evans said, “We are all devastated by Sue’s sudden death. Not only was she my fellow ward councillor and personal friend but she showed so much promise in her work on the council and as councillor for Wickham and Knowle. Although she was only elected last May, Sue was a complete natural as a local councillor and immediately settled into progressing casework on behalf of her constituents. She obviously had a bright future in local government. Over the last 20 years Sue has progressed so many local community projects such as the restoration of former Knowle Cemetery, local affordable housing and local music weeks. She will be a great loss to both Wickham and Knowle and the council and will be much missed.”

Sue with her husband Ted have been totally committed to their local communities and together they have coordinated the Meon Valley Community Responders Group as well as running Wickham Venture Scouts for 10 years.

Cllr George Beckett Leader of Winchester City Council said, "Both councillors and staff of Winchester City Council have been sad to hear of the sudden death of Cllr Sue Fitzgerald. After living in her ward of Wickham for over 20 years she took a keen interest in local issues, particularly those related to the environment. She had only recently been elected to the Council and I'm sure all councillors were looking forward to working more closely with her during her term in office. We would like to pass our sympathies and condolences on to the family"
