Pre Olympic Games Camps for Winchester?
Winchester City Council is working with three sports facilities in the district to submit bids for them to be considered as pre games camps for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The outcome will be known in May 2007 and if the bids are successful, details will be included in a prospectus to be distributed at the 2008 Beijing Games. This is the recommended route for International Olympic and Paralympic Federations to book their pre-games training camps.
The facilities which meet the minimum requirements for Pre Olympic Games Camps are:
- Westgate Badminton Centre at Westgate School which has five purpose-built badminton courts and is the best facility for badminton in Hampshire
- The Equine Centre at Sparsholt College which includes 50 stables, an indoor arena, and two outdoor arenas
- and the proposed Olympic standard, eight lane athletics track and field facility at the University of Winchester Sports Ground, Bar End.
Winchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport, Patricia Stallard, said: "The decision made by international teams to base themselves in Winchester could be influenced not only by the quality of facilities but by other factors, such as cultural links and the quality of the tourism product, and we believe we have a lot to offer."
