Description

article thumb - Pies and Prejudice
Pies and Prejudice is an entertaining exploration of the significance of food in the letters and novels of Jane Austen. Two characters, Jenny, the new cook, and Charlotte, the lady of the house, share opinions on food, health, gardening and marriage. Cecily O'Neill, the writer, said: "Food is always cropping up in Austen's work and correspondence. Mrs Bennet uses it to impress her social circle, Emma administers soft-boiled eggs to her father, and a betrayed Marianne Dashwood refuses it all together. It was clearly both a pleasure for her and a way in which she could subtly and wittily indicate both status and character in her books."
