Description

New evidence on the role and contribution of community hospitals has emerged from an NIHR Community Hospitals Programme consisting of 3 major research studies. These focused respectively on value, efficiency and international transferable learning. Community hospitals are small predominantly rural hospitals that are supported by community-based staff such as local GPs. Community hospitals are being shown to provide a valuable and valued service and to play a role in integrating care and community health and wellbeing. Findings from these studies provide an important contribution to those planning, providing and using health services. The Community Hospitals Association (CHA) was on the research teams and project boards, and is supporting the dissemination of the programme. Dr Helen Tucker is President of the Community Hospitals Association which is a UK wide organisation promoting community hospitals and supporting research.
