Description

article thumb - Dawson Heights, South London

Celebrated architect, Kate Macintosh, will give the C20 Southern annual lecture this year. Kate Macintosh studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and following graduation spent time in Warsaw, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki. Returning to work in the UK Kate Macintosh went on to design buildings for ‘public benefit that were at once bold, original and humane’ (Rowan Moore, Guardian). Her buildings include the famous Dawson Heights in West Norwood (1966-74) to provide homes for nearly 1,300 people on a sloping site designed while working for the local authority in Southwark. Moving on to Lambeth Kate designed a sheltered housing scheme – 269 Leigham Court Road. The scheme, a 44 flat complex, often described as ‘a modern gem’, has subsequently been listed and renamed Macintosh Court. She went on to work for the counties of East Sussex and Hampshire continuing her commitment to publicly funded sheltered housing, schools and fire services. Kate’s design of a playground in Weston, Southampton winning a RIBA award in 2005. Extras: We are holding the event in the Hampshire Record Office an important building designed by Professor Sir Colin Stansfield Smith, who served as Head of Hampshire County Architects Department from 1973-92. And if you are making a special trip to Winchester for this event we have a list of, and brief notes on, buildings in the vicinity that may be of interest.
