West Waterlooville - Public Art Programme
West Waterlooville is a Major Development Area in the south-east of Winchester District, adjoining Waterlooville. On completion it will result in over 3,000 new homes. A public art programme, funded through a Section 106 agreement, has had various iterations since developer, Grainger PLC, gained planning permission in 2012.
In 2023, after a competitive procurement process, Winchester City Council commissioned Studio Response to devise a new programme of public art for West Waterlooville. The Public Art Plan sets out the approach to delivering public art on the development over the next ten years – the estimated time developer Grainger will be on site. Plot Lines
Led by artists and writers and using the power of storytelling and words to connect people, Plot Lines aims to gather, listen to and share community stories and anecdotes from living in and near Waterlooville.
There will be free workshops and events from April 2025 and informal opportunities to meet with the Plot Lines writer in residence Aoife Mannix. Aoife is an award-winning poet and writer who is keen to chat with local residents about their personal experiences of moving to the area, their feelings about home, their memories, and their dreams for the future. Alongside Aoife, writers and partners will be hosting workshops, walks and talks, some targeting older and younger people, ensuring an intergenerational voice is captured. Writing will be shared at regular intervals.
Plot Lines will also set up a small group for residents who care about what happens in their area and who want to have a say in the cultural life of their neighbourhood and ultimately help shape the public art within the area. In any new development, residents often have pressing concerns - things like site safety, parking, and public facilities. This new group is a chance to come together and talk about something else: the future. For example, what kind of arts activity would you love to see in the area? What do you imagine for the cultural life of your neighbourhood?
