New community cookery classes
A new six-week course of community cookery skills classes aimed at men over 55 years of age will be run by Winchester City Council this autumn.
The sessions are made possible thanks to money awarded by a Public Health Funding grant from Hampshire County Council.
The course has had previous success in a number of areas across the Winchester district. Des Holyhead, who attended the course in Bishop’s Waltham, said the course helped him when his wife was going into hospital and he needed to learn cookery skills to look after himself properly.
The course helps participants to learn ideas and tips on preparing simple healthy meals.
The classes will be held at Winchester Fire Station, Easton Lane, Winnall SO23 0LF. The weekly sessions are from 2-3.30pm, from Monday 14 September to Monday 19 October.
In a friendly relaxed atmosphere those taking part will consider:
- How to cook a range of simple meals from start to finish
- Food shopping ideas
- Food hygiene and storage
- The importance of healthy eating to health and wellbeing
All places must be booked in advance. Contact Nicola Lawrence on 01962 848 083 or email nlawrence@winchester.gov.uk
The course costs just £1 per session and all ingredients are provided.
