Winchester Live!

Come to Winchester during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games and you can experience the atmosphere of the event by watching the action unfold on two large scale screens situated in Winchester’s historic Cathedral Close.

Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council and Winchester Cathedral have worked with London 2012 to ensure that residents from across Hampshire will have a unique gathering point in which to celebrate the Games as they happen.

Two screens will be strategically positioned to ensure that the maximum number of people can catch the action. And to ensure the atmosphere is family friendly refreshments are available on site, as well as toilets facilities. The area is also smoke and alcohol free zone.

It is hoped the initiative will give local residents an opportunity to get involved in the spirit of the Games and also enhance the City’s appeal for day trippers.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture and Sport said,

The hugely successful Olympic Torch Relay event last week showed just how well Winchester can host large scale events that are a draw for visitors but most importantly a pull for the community to come together and celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

With these two giant screens in place in the Cathedral Close, Winchester offers a unique backdrop to witness the world-class entertainment that is the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our Sports and Physical Activity Team are to be congratulated on their considerable efforts to ensure our District is firmly on the Olympic map.”

If Olympic fans are looking to stretch their legs between on-screen highlights, there are additional sporting opportunities to get into the spirit of the Games.

Local clubs will be offering a variety of taster sessions including table tennis, basketball, Tae Kwon Do, cycling, football and canoeing.
