Get Ready for a Year Full of Activity as Winchester Counts Down One Year to Go to the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games

Wednesday 27th July will see one year to go to the start of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games and the Winchester District has an array of event and activity opportunities on offer for residents and visitors alike.

With the aim of engaging with every school, club and parish Winchester will start the year off on the back of the success of the 2011 Sports Awards. Nomination packs and guidance can be found on the Winchester 2012 website (www.winchester2012.co.uk).

After this the Winchester 2012 programme will see local sports clubs work on a number of initiatives to provide opportunities for local residents. Twenty five Winchester 2012 Clubs have been selected to help provide more opportunities and increase participation in sport across the district. Clubs involved include, hockey, rugby, football, cricket, basketball, netball, swimming, taekwondo, boxing, American football and table tennis to name but a few.

These clubs will also be in attendance at the Winchester 2012 Sports Festival to take place on Sunday 20th May 2011 at the Winchester Sports Stadium. The Sports Festival will provide a platform for people to access sports clubs and have a go at sports and a variety of fun activities. The day will include challenging activities for teenagers, fun inflatables for the young and not so young as well  healthy eating stands and a chance to meet famous sporting personalities.

Winchester 2012 Personal Bests will follow the Winchester Sports Festival and is a chance for every school in the district to shine and show that their children can achieve their personal best. Personal Bests is a mass participation event and aims to show children that setting their own goals and beating them is as important as winning. The event will build on the success of 2010 and 2011 and will engage with over 2,000 young people at a final festival celebration in June 2012.

The Winchester 2012: Parish Celebration project is encouraging each parish and ward in the Winchester District to put on their own celebration in the build up to London 2012 to make the most of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. More information on each celebration to be available on the event calendar at www.winchester2012.co.uk

Winchester currently plays host to three facilities for pre games training camps. Any visiting Olympic or Paralympic team can apply to use the first class facilities for athletics, badminton or equestrian events that Winchester has to offer prior to the games next year.

For information on any of the above projects please contact the Sport & Physical Activity Team at Winchester City Council on 01962 848532 or e-mail sport@winchester.gov.uk

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport commented ‘We are fully committed to offering local people a variety of opportunities to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We would like to make the idea of every parish, school and sports club having an active involvement in our projects a reality. I would urge local people to get involved in these projects and make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.’
