Proactive approach sees Christmas Purse theft fall in Winchester

The number of reported purse thefts fell by 52.8 % during the festive shopping season in 2010 when compared with the same period in 2009.

During the festive season Winchester Community Safety Partnership (WCSP) took a proactive approach to reduce purse theft within the City as a part of a wider Christmas Campaign. Members of the partnership offered advice to shoppers and visitors about keeping their valuables safe and handed out free lanyards and jingle bells to secure to their wallets, handbags or purses.

Cllr Lucille Thompson Portfolio Holder for Communities and Chair of WCSP said, “It is good to see that the awareness campaigns delivered by the partnership are having a positive impact on residents and visitors to our City”. The reduction in incidents shows that individuals are thinking about their own safety and security which reduces the chances for opportunist thieves”.
