Eating out in Winchester just got tastier – Winchester’s latest Hampshire Hospitality Award Winners announced

Winchester diners can now be sure of a quality eating experience as 23 of the district’s eateries have been announced as Hampshire Hospitality Award-winners for 2010/2011.

Now in its fifth year, the Hampshire Hospitality Award is a quality marque for restaurants, tea rooms, pubs, cafés and other eateries in the county. The award celebrates the best of Hampshire's eating experiences. This year over a third of those awarded a quality marque in Hampshire came from the Winchester district.

Winchester’s Black Rat Restaurant, Brasserie Blanc, The Chesil Rectory, Gandhi Indian Cuisine and the Hotel du Vin all received the top rating of Superior Quality Assured together with the following rural businesses: The Bell Inn at Alresford, Greens Restaurant and Bar in Wickham, Lainston House Hotel at Sparsholt, The Running Horse in Littleton and The Thomas Lord at West Meon.

Councillor Dominic Hiscock, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Prosperity, said, “This year’s awards attracted several new eateries in the Winchester district – proving that our local businesses see the value of this award. The quality of local food on offer, the service and the overall dining experience visitors get when eating in the city or one of the area’s many rural pubs is certainly proving to put Winchester on the UK’s gastronomical map.”

All the businesses taking part underwent a rigorous ‘mystery shopper’ assessment. The trained assessors considered every aspect of the customer experience including cleanliness, hospitality, service and efficiency, presentation and food quality. Businesses could also opt for an additional assessment – devised by local food group Hampshire Fare - on their use of local produce.
