First Thursdays Strikes Again!

The programme of First Thursdays street entertainment, arts & crafts, and food continues this Thursday 2nd September, on Winchester High Street.  Mark the end of the summer holidays with a lazy evening browsing the market stalls in Winchester city centre.

The last event saw performances from Red Jackson, who will entertain the crowds again this week with their jazz and blues.  We were also joined by steel drums band Hurricane Force, bringing the streets alive.  Food included Thai cuisine from Bangkok Brasserie, Asian food from Tanoshi, and a hog roast from Earl of Sandwich.

Cllr Dominic Hiscock, Portfolio Holder for Economic Prosperity at Winchester City Council, said: “The last event was a great success.  Shops were open late, there were stalls run by businesses from across the city including The Beanstalk and All That Glitters, and plenty of food, drink and music to enjoy.  It was fantastic fun!”

This week will see late night opening again, along with 1960s and 1970s music from Hattie Jacques Playlist.  There will be more stalls to enjoy on the High Street, and tables and chairs so you can linger and enjoy some food and drink from local eateries.

Amy McCartan, Marketing and communications for Winchester BID said: “I am thrilled that the first event was well received with stall holders and local businesses, with a large number of people attending. Our footfall cameras showed an increase of 8.1% compared to the same day last year and a 7.4% increase on the first Thursday of last month. I am looking forward to the next event.”

The monthly street party is being held to make the most of Winchester City Centre during the early evening, which is currently a very quiet period.  With the shops open late and more people around, it has a safer and livelier feel for everyone to enjoy.  The events will feature businesses from around the city, who will display the First Thursdays poster as a sign that they are taking part.
