First Thursdays start this week!

This Thursday, the city’s new programme of street entertainment called First Thursdays will begin in Winchester High Street.

The first Thursdays of August, September, October and November will see a range of food, arts, crafts, music and shopping on Winchester High Street.

Pop along after work or spend the evening in the city centre evening with your family for a relaxed party atmosphere between 4pm and 8pm.

Cllr Dominic Hiscock, Portfolio Holder for Economic Prosperity at Winchester City Council, is looking forward to the first of the four events. He said: “We have some excellent bands on to get the party started, and fantastic local eateries taking part with special offers and tasters.  The line up looks set to make a great evening, so I would recommend delaying your journey home and missing the traffic to catch the First Thursdays experience!”

Each month the First Thursday party will have a theme, starting with families in August.  Throughout the four months, you will see live music from the likes of trio Red Jackson and steel band Hurricane Force.  Local food and locally-made arts and crafts will also be on offer

Keith Wilson, Manager of Winchester BID, said: “The First Thursdays events present an exciting opportunity to enhance the early evening economy while at the same time showcasing the wares of a number of exciting Winchester businesses. It’s sure to be a lot of fun for all those who choose to join us.”

The monthly party is being held to make the most of Winchester City Centre during the early evening, which is usually a very quiet period in the city centre.  The event will feature businesses from around the city, who will display the First Thursdays poster as a sign that they are taking part.
