New Football Pitches for Winchester

A local girls’ football team has become the first to make use of Winchester City Council’s two new full-size pitches available for hire at the Garrison Ground, Bar End.

There is now a total of three full-size and five mini pitches available at the ground, with changing rooms available at the new Winchester Sports Stadium facility. The new high-quality pitches are suitable for both adults and juniors to use.

The Winchester City Flyers girls’ under-14s team became the first team to sign-up to use the pitches. The team finished the 08/09 season at the top of the North East Hampshire Youth League and, as they now make the move up to the Under-15s league, they are hoping to repeat that success.

Girls’ football is the fastest growing sport in the UK. Since the early 1990s there has been a steady increase in the number of female football players of all ages, and in women’s and girls’ clubs, leagues and competitions. The number of players currently stands at over 150,000, compared with just 10,000 15 years ago.

It was following this increase in popularity and demand for pitches that Winchester City Council proposed a change in pitch layout to accommodate all age ranges. The new larger pitches, which overlay the traditional six-a-side pitches, also give younger players the chance to play on an adult pitch.

Cllr Stallard, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and Sport, said: “The new pitches offer football teams a great surface to play on, and enable the Council to meet an increasing demand for both junior and adult pitches.  It is fantastic to see the growth in girls’ football - and to be able to make provision for this through our facilities at the Garrison Ground.”

The Council is keen to see other teams benefit from the new pitches as well.  For booking enquiries please call Hannah Bone on 01962 848 231 or email hebone@winchester.gov.uk
