Look Beyond the Cover

A new exhibition at the view, Winchester's visual arts space in Bridge Street, explores a ‘novel’ way of looking at books. Madeleine Humphries’ exhibition is called ‘Look Beyond the Cover’ and focuses on the intricate beauty of books as objects, as opposed to just sources of information.

Madeleine is a second year Fine Art student at Winchester School of Art. She has chosen to follow the pathway of printmaking, but within that pathway she has been specialising in books.

Madeleine said:  “My books are not so much about their content, but about their aesthetics. My work is concerned with the shape and feeling of the books that we very often take for granted.  People don’t consider the book as an object, it is always about the content that is held within the pages of the book; but books are beautiful.  I am trying to convey this to my audience; I want them to look at a book and really look at its form.”

‘Look beyond the Cover’ is Madeleine’s way of enticing the viewer to look a little deeper; to see more than just folded bits of paper and begin to see the beauty within.

The exhibition is open now and runs until Friday 6th June 2008, and you can visit it for free.
