Volunteer programme for Winchester Museums

Winchester City Council’s museum service is building a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers to help others explore and experience the history of Winchester and the surrounding district.

To this end, a first group of six volunteers has been through an induction and training day at the City Museum.  The six volunteers enjoyed an afternoon of history with tea and cake, courtesy of staff at the City Museum.

Michael Nelles, Senior Visitor Assistant at the City Museum, commented, “It was a pleasure to introduce the volunteers to the City Museum. It is always enjoyable to meet people who are enthusiastic about Winchester's history, and to give those people a platform from which to share their enthusiasm with others.  I can't wait to see our volunteers interacting with visitors this summer."

New volunteer Valerie Pegg said, “I feel very excited about getting involved with the museum service and hope that I will be able to assist in many different ways over the coming year.”

Winchester City Council is committed to encouraging people to participate in cultural and sporting activities across the District, and the museums community programme is just one of a number of projects designed to support this objective.   Volunteers will help in a range of ways, from lending a hand at special events and on busy days during high season, to behind-the-scenes administration.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport, added, “I am sure our new recruits will quickly become part of the dynamic and creative museum team, and that they will enjoy feeling involved in the wonderful heritage of Winchester and district. I hope that plenty more people will come forward to join them.”
