Festive fun at the City Museum

Once again Winchester City Council is weaving a little magic to create Christmas fun at the City Museum. The museum is hosting family events throughout the festive season from medieval Christmas music to the making of giant Christmassy coins.

From Friday 1 December 2006 to Friday 5 January 2007 families are invited to come and test their powers of observation in two free fun children's quizzes. Take a break from the turkey and mince pies to spot robins perched high and low around the museum displays, or become a history detective and hunt for weird and wonderful objects from the past as you walk round the galleries of the museum. Successful eagle-eyed robin spotters and history sleuths will be rewarded with a small but tasty prize.

On Friday 1 December, the museum is hosting Creative Workshops for Kids who will be leading children in a Christmas 'make and take' event.  Children will be making sparkly mosaic stars, angels and snowflakes to take home, all inspired by Roman mosaics on display in the museum.

On Sunday 17 December, kindly sponsored by Family Match, Creative Workshops will be returning to make giant silver Christmas coins and crowns with visiting families and children.  Family Match, based in Winchester, Hampshire, was established in 1993, and has grown to become one of the UK's leading and most respected childcare agencies and we are grateful for them sponsoring this family fun event.

Finally on Saturday 16 December from 10am until 1.30pm - kindly sponsored by Jermani Jewellery - the sounds of medieval music will be heard throughout the museum.  There will also be an exhibition of gold and silver jewellery for sale in the reception foyer of the museum. Jermani Jewellery first exhibited at the museum during the Making Merry open studios weekend during November with huge success.

Then on Wednesday 20 December, medieval festive music will be played from 11am until 4pm.  The festive music will be performed by the well known local group, Winchester Waytes on Saturday 16 December and Wednesday 20 December 2006.

Sher Kent, Visitor Services Manager for Winchester Museums commented, "There is a whole host of different events at the museum this winter, so why not escape the cold and rain and the crowds of last minute shoppers for a warm welcome and a spot of fun for all the family at the City Museum?"

Admission is free for all events and no booking is required.

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 4pm, Sunday noon - 4pm . The museum will be closed Sunday 24, Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 December.  It reopens on Wednesday 27 December from 10am to 4pm.
