Winchester's Southgate Street work extended

Work in Winchester city centre, initially to replace gas mains, has had to be extended for two weeks as Southern Water have discovered a broken foul sewer in Southgate Street, immediately opposite the entrance to The Screen.

Southern Water can access the damaged areas from the end of the gas works site and it has been agreed that work starts immediately. It is due to end on 24/25 June.

Cllr Barry Lipscomb, Winchester City Council's Cabinet portfolio holder for planning and transport, welcomed the end of the gas main work which has been completed on time. He regretted the additional two weeks for other work but added "it is sensible to do it this way."

"I would like to thank local businesses that have been affected by the work and the general public for their forebearance over recent weeks," he said.

"At times it may have appeared that there was little work going on but due to some of the operations that needed to be carried out, such as cleansing pipes and pressure checks, it is not always possible to be doing something that 'looks' constructive."
