The Romans are coming!

Watch out: the Romans are back! The City Museum in the Square, Winchester is hosting a Roman invasion from Thursday 16 February to Saturday 18 February 2006.

The Romans visiting Winchester are from the Legio Secunda Augusta Living History Society and will include a legionary soldier in full military dress and a Roman lady in all her finery. Visitors to the event will be able to find out about the lives of the people of Venta Belgarum, the old Roman city of Winchester, nearly two thousand years ago. Roman Winchester was the fifth largest Roman town in Britain and one of the first to have defences.

Sher Kent from Winchester City Council's museum service, commented," We are delighted to be working with Legio Secunda Augusta Living History Society again and are impressed by their high calibre historical accuracy." She added, "During the three day 'invasion', there will be lots to see and do including handling replica Roman objects and seeing the museum's displays of real Roman jewellery, coins and beautiful mosaics".

Cllr Therese Evans, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport added, "This event portrays a fascinating and influential period of history in Winchester - the birth of the modern society as we know it today. These three days of the halfterm holidays promise to be really interesting ones.".

Admission to this event is free - just turn up.

Opening hours: 10.00 - 5.00 each day
