Reluctant to take tea with the Mayor
Press Release: 29/08/2006
Residents of Winchester seem very reluctant to take tea with the Mayor!
Mayor Cllr Sue Nelmes is throwing a tea party to celebrate her 70th birthday this August and is inviting all those people in the district born in 1936 a chance to come to her tea party at Abbey House, Winchester.
"But I am a little disappointed that we have only had a handful of responses so far," she said.
"It could be that people have been away on holiday during August so I have extended the date they can get back to me until 8 September. Some people might also feel shy about putting themselves forward so I'm asking that family and friends can also nominate someone to come along," she added.
The first 40 people to respond will be invited to celebrate turning 70 at one of the grandest addresses in the district.
Cllr Nelmes said, "Seventy is a great milestone and it is fabulous to have the opportunity to share it with the people I'm representing as Mayor this year. I hope people from all corners of the district will apply as it would be lovely to have a diverse group of people sharing their experiences of the last 70 years."
If you would like a chance to come to the party, or nominate someone you know, then all you have to do is write to the Mayor stating your or their name, address, telephone number and date of birth.
The closing date for applications is Friday 8 September. If you are lucky enough to be one of the first 40 replies then you will be sent a special invitation which you will have to show when you attend. All applicants must be free on Tuesday 19 September at 3pm.
