MotoCross comes to Winchester

Winchester City Council has been informed about the possibility of two international MotoCross events taking place at Cheesefoot Head, Winchester, next year.

They are the British round of the FIM MotoCross World Championship, to be held in June 2006 and the MotoCross of Nations, described as 'the Olympics of MotoCross', to be held in September 2006.

The City Council has been contacted by the event promoters and is working with them to establish more information about what might be involved.

Cllr Jim Wagner Portfolio Holder for Environmental Health said "Events like these could potentially prove very beneficial for both tourism and the local economy, however we must ensure that this does not come at the expense of the district's residents or environment.

"We want to work closely with the promoters to gain the maximum benefit, at the least cost to the district".

A project team is being set up within the Council representing all the different departments that may be effected to ensure a joined up approach for all council services. This will include among others transport management, planning, licensing and environmental health, as well as tourism services.

The group will ensure that if the events do go ahead they will be run with the best interests of the local community and the environment in mind.
