Hampshire Mini Games
Saturday 8 May will see 9 teams represent the Winchester District at the Hampshire Mini Games held at Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre.
The Mini Games, which is this year sponsored by Partners Against Railway Crime, are part of the Hampshire games which incorporates the Mini, Parallel and Youth Games. The games, which are aimed at primary-aged school children, will see over 500 young people from local authorities across the County compete in 7 sports: Athletics, Girls Football, Hockey, Netball, Swimming, Tag-rugby and Tennis.
The Winchester District will be represented in 6 of the 7 sports with teams coming from Winchester & District Athletics Club, Stanmore, Western and Micheldever Primary School, Bishops Waltham Junior Tennis and Alresford Netball.
Cllr Therese Evans, Winchester City Council's Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Services, emphasised the importance of the games. "This event gives young people from across the district and the county the chance to experience sporting competition and a chance to excel in sports that they usually play as hobbies. You never know, these games could ignite the spark of enthusiasm that produces some of our future Olympians," she added.
All are welcome to come along and support the teams with plenty of entertainment for families and those not taking part, including an inflatable squash court, fencing roadshow, face painting and Kabadi demo. Sports competitions will commence at 11am with a closing ceremony at 3pm.
