The role of Deputy Mayor was first introduced in Winchester at the end of the 19th Century.
Deputy Mayor for 2016-2017 is Cllr David McLean.
The Deputy Mayor stands in for the Mayor should he or she be unavailable. In the following year it is tradition for the Deputy Mayor to be elected Mayor.
A few words from the Deputy Mayor
I am 64 years old, married to Diane, Father to two great kids and Grandfather to two more. I am hugely proud of my kids, their achievements and the way they move through life. My family has benefited from growing up in Bishops Waltham. What a great place to live.
I have worked pretty much all my life, only broken by a couple of medical issues. Latterly I have worked in the renewables industry, specifically solar, before this as a salesman for a major used car operation; yes used cars! I ran my own businesses for a number of years, working with major oil companies. Great fun but occasionally stressful.
I have worked as a fundraiser for a number of charities, the Air Ambulances of Hampshire and Surrey, the Red and White appeal at Southampton General Hospital.
I have been semi-retired for a few years, starting to enjoy the fruits of my labours, and allowing me to devote more time to my duties as a Councillor.
I look forward to serving Winchester District as its Deputy Mayor, and will offer all my support to our new Mayor, Councillor Jane Rutter, and wish her well.
