Disability Sport

Winchester City Council and its partners are committed to ensuring that there are opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in a variety of structured sports sessions. After the unprecedented success of Paralympics GB last year, the council set up the Winchester District Disability Sports Forum. Created to help with the vision of improving opportunities and developing accessible sport and physical activities for disabled people, the forum has been developing its own action plan that links closely to the SPAA Strategy.

Initially the forum have worked on a survey to assess participation levels and opportunities that currently exist in sport and physical activity provision. The group are also keen to understand which sports could be set up and provided to disabled people as a new sporting offer in the Winchester District. The results of this survey are due in May 2013 and will show people’s views on training, facilities and access to leisure which will help inform the groups future plans. The survey will be a starting block for disability sports provision in the District, where the information we gather will help to drive new initiatives and events, and increase awareness and knowledge of disability sport across the District.

Further to the survey forum members have been developing new activities and supporting groups to develop and deliver further disability sports opportunities. Please come along to any of the following sessions or e-mail sport@winchester.gov.uk for more information.
