Renaming & Numbering
On very rare occasions it becomes necessary to rename or renumber a street. This is only done as a last resort when:
- there is confusion over a street name;
- a group of residents are unhappy with their street name or;
- new properties are built in a street and there is a need to renumber to accommodate the new properties.
This will only be done when there is no alternative. Existing residents will be contacted and their views taken into account.
Residents should first contact their Parish Council and the Parish Council should then contact this office at Winchester City Council with their proposal to change the name of the street, with the suggested new name. Please bear in mind the possibility of Royal Mail wanting to change the postcode We will then consult with the Ward Councillor and the Royal Mail for their position on the issue. To change a street name we ballot the local residents living on the street and seek their approval of the proposed change. Hopefully there will be 100% support, but we require at least a two thirds majority to make the change.
This is a very time consuming process and we are only able to progress a couple of these issues at any one time. However, if you think you have a street naming issue, please contact us:
