The loan scheme will still be available for cyclists who wish to loan a bike for a short period. These bikes will still be available to anyone over the age of 18 to borrow, once they become a member of the scheme. The annual membership fee of £50 is payable to Winchester City Council (WCC) or Community First Wessex (CFW). The bikes available for the loan scheme will be limited to the original Pashley white bikes.
The Bikeabout scheme was initially funded through the MIRACLES project and jointly run by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council. Its objective was to reduce air pollution and transport congestion, and also provide cleaner and better public transport. Bikeabout, which helps to deliver these objectives, aims to encourage the use of cycling as a means of transport within Winchester. The Bikeabout scheme has just received funding from the Department of Transport through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
The Bikeabout scheme is now run jointly by Winchester City Council (WCC) and Community First Wessex (CFW).
