Flood Alleviation Scheme - Park Avenue/St.Bedes, Winchester

The North Winchester Flooding Alleviation Scheme is a jointly funded scheme between Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council, the University of Southampton School of Art and Central Government (through Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Grant in Aid funding allocated by the Environment Agency (EA)).

This scheme will protect the River Park Leisure Centre, St Bedes CE Primary School, the University of Southampton School of Art, residential properties in Park Road, and reduces the risk of flooding in other residential streets such as Middlebrook Street, Upper Brook Street and the High Street.

Status - On Schedule

Latest Status
  • Phase 1 - Works continued to excavate and construct the RC retaining wall in St.Bedes School and commence the brickwork cladding.  Additional trial holes have been undertaken to determine the extent of the utility services in the area.  Additional tree removal has been undertaken in the area to the north of the Rotunda building at the Winchester School of Art.
  • Phase 2 - Site clearance completed, the gas main has been located, and excavation and blinding the wall base has commenced.
  • Phase 3 - Construction has been completed of the earth bund wall to the east of the Indoor Bowling Club.  Works have also continued to the north of the Leisure Centre to construct the sleeper wall.

Next Steps

Complete the works by St.Bedes School and behind the Indoor Bowling Centre.  Once this is concluded work will start outside the River Park Leisure Centre and the skate park.
