Winchester Domestic Violence and Abuse Forum marked International White Ribbon Day with an event in the city centre on Monday 26 November 2018.

Representatives from the Forum’s partner agencies, including Winchester City Council Community Safety & Neighbourhood Services Team, the Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, YouTrust, Winchester Soroptimist, Hampshire Police, BID Ranger and Trinity Women’s Service were joined by the Mayor of Winchester Councillor Frank Pearson and his wife Anne in Winchester city centre to show their support for eliminating violence against women.

Local businesses also joined the campaign and raised awareness by wearing white ribbons.

Councillor Lisa Griffith, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing said:

We are proud to support this national initiative demonstrating support and solidarity for victims of domestic abuse. It is important that those still suffering know that there is help, advice and kindness to be found in our community. We hope that this message reaches them and that they are encouraged to take the first steps towards finding that help.

The event was particularly poignant as the ‘With One Voice Choir’, performed 'The Journey' - a song about surviving domestic abuse and advocating for those women still suffering the effects of violence. One member of the choir said:

Considering I didn’t think I had a voice, I’ve now had my voice heard throughout Winchester.

If you are suffering domestic violence and would like to seek help please telephone 03300 165 112 for confidential help and support.
