On Thursday 27 April, 12 primary schools were invited to attend the Winchester Golf Academy to take part in the annual Winchester Tri-Golf Festival.

Prior to the festival, schools took part in 6 weeks of tri-golf activities, delivered by the Sport & Physical Activity team at Winchester City Council to teach children the necessary skills to be able to compete against others.

Schools involved included All Saints, Harestock, Shepherds Down, South Wonston, Sparsholt, Stanmore, St Bedes, St Faiths, Osborne, Otterbourne, Western and Winnall. Over 700 pupils took part in the project, with 211 attending the festival - all battling to win a place to represent their school at the Hampshire school games.

During the festival each team completed 8 different activities to test their skills and score as many points as possible.

Harestock came away as champions in the year 3/4 category, with St Faith’s in 2nd place and South Wonston 3rd.

Otterbourne took first place in the year 5/6 category with St Faiths close runners up and St Bede’s taking 3rd place. The winners and runners up in each tournament will go on to represent Winchester at the Hampshire School Games.

Student sports leaders from Peter Symonds College and Swanmore College of Excellence volunteered throughout the day to ensure the event ran smoothly.

Jeremy Broadway, Physical Education Teacher at Swanmore College said:

Our sports leaders were proud to assist in the organisation of this wonderful event run by Winchester City Council. The primary school pupils from all over the Winchester area were fantastic, so friendly and worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon. It was wonderful to see the quality of golf play developing during the day.

A huge thank you must also go to the Winchester Golf Academy who hosted the day for all the schools and kindly closed the driving range to the public to hold the tri-golf festival.

Gary Booth, the Club manager at Winchester Golf Academy said:

Winchester Golf Academy was proud to host the Tri-Golf Festival and have already noticed a surge in participation from the pupils which took part. We have worked closely with Winchester City Council this year to encourage more people to take up the game we love and look forward to seeing these youngsters develop over the next few years.

Winchester Golf Academy is dedicated to encouraging junior participation in golf. Junior members have the benefits of golf all year round on a superb driving range with fully qualified teaching professionals, as well as established practice facilities.
