Winchester pupils 'Tri-Golf' in tournament

EIGHT schools in the Winchester District recently took part in a Tri-Golf tournament organised by Winchester City Council.

The tournament was held at Royal Winchester Golf Course and involved St Faith’s Church of England Primary School, Harestock Primary School, Western Church of England School, Winnall Primary School, Otterbourne Primary School, South Wonston Primary School, All Saints Church of England Primary School and St Bede’s Church of England Primary School.

Winchester City Council visited the schools to deliver six weeks of Tri-Golf skills prior to the tournament.

Each team completed eight different activities (Bullseye, Dominoes, Drive for Show, Finders Keepers, Grand National, Tunnel Ball, Zone Ball and Down the Middle).

In the Year 3/4 tournament, Otterbourne Primary School came out on top, followed by South Wonston Primary School in second and St Faith’s Church of England Primary School in third.

In the Year 5/6 tournament, St Faith’s were the winners, with Harestock Primary in second and Otterbourne Primary in third place.

The winners and second-placed schools will go on to represent Winchester at the Hampshire School Games.

Stuart Dubber, Club Manager at Royal Winchester Golf Course, said:

“This was a great event which allowed hundreds of children to come together and play at a golf course. All of the children had fun and thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

Calum Drummond, Sports Development Manager at Winchester City Council, added:

“It was fantastic to see so many schools take part. In total, we engaged with just over 450 children throughout the six weeks introducing them to a sport which the majority of them hadn’t tried before. We’d like to thank the volunteers from Peter Symonds College who helped deliver the sessions in the schools and were on hand throughout the day to ensure the event ran smoothly. We’d also like to thank Arsenal Soccer Schools Hampshire and Dorset for their assistance with the school sessions. Well done to all who were involved and good luck to Otterbourne, South Wonston, St Faith’s and Harestock in the Hampshire School Games.”

Royal Winchester Golf Course is dedicated to encouraging junior participation in golf. Junior members have the benefits of golf all year round on a superb downland course, including access to fully qualified teaching professionals, established practise facilities, weekly competitions and home or away matches with other Hampshire clubs.

Junior memberships are available priced £15 per year for Under 12s, £70 per year for Under 15s and £125 per year for Under 18s.
