Long-term financial plan set to support and boost the local economy of Winchester and District
The City Council decided at its meeting last night (Thursday 25 February) to approve the first increase in Council Tax in six years in order to maintain vital services.
Cllr Stephen Godfrey, the Leader of the City Council, said:
This extra Council Tax will allow us to continue with sensible measures to promote businesses across all parts of the District to encourage even more people to shop and do business in our district and to visit this wonderful area.
The total council tax charges for our services for 2016/17 will be £2.51 a week for the average household - an increase of less than 9p a week for Council services. This level is one that we feel balances the budget to enable us to continue to meet the needs of our residents.
Council Tax is collected by us on behalf of Hampshire County Council (£1,079.28 per annum), the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire (£160.46per annum), Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority (£62.60 per annum) , Town and Parish Councils (£71.82 per annum - average), along with the £130.65 per annum for the City Council. This equals an average bill for a Band D property of £1,504.81in total.
