Waste plant application withdrawal welcomed

Winchester City Council has welcomed the withdrawal of a planning application for a waste plant at Micheldever Station.

The proposal, which dates back to 2012, has been withdrawn following an appeal decision last week. Although the planning decision was determined by Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Council’s Planning Committee unanimously supported officer recommendations to oppose the proposal.

Cllr Stephen Godfrey, the Leader of Winchester City Council, said:

The residents of Micheldever Station should be pleased with this decision and very proud that their efforts to resist this wholly inappropriate proposal have been successful. Special praise must go to the Micheldever Action Group and the Micheldever Parish Council, which have campaigned most effectively to block the destruction of their rural settlement.

The application by Clean Power Properties and Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd could have seen a 24/7 waste plant to process household, commercial and industrial waste with up to four 100ft chimneys plus an office, visitor centre and new access road located at Overton Road in Micheldever Station where the railway sidings are a site of importance for nature conservation.
