The Great Waste Re:Design challenge launched on 10 October
The Great Waste Re:Design Challenge is being launched on Saturday 10 October at Winchester School of Art with a one-day fashion design ‘boot camp’ for teams from local schools and colleges.
The Great Waste Re:Design Challenge, open until 11 March 2016, invites people from across Winchester district to come up with designs to make something useful from waste, and it must be one that other people can recreate.
There are categories for a new garment, a textile or an item that can be used at home, in the garden or at work. The judges will look for easy-to-follow instructions to create a useful object that does its job well - something that will inspire people to look at stuff they throw out with new eyes.
The Great Waste Re:Design Challenge is open to creative designers in the Winchester District of any age. Submissions are welcome from individuals, groups or families, professionals and non-professional alike.
Details of how to enter the Re:Design Challenge and criteria will be on The Great Waste website from 10 October (www.thegreatwaste.org.uk).

The Great Waste has been the Council’s campaign theme for the year, delivered in partnership with Winchester Action on Climate Change. The Re:Design Challenge is a creative and colourful way to look at waste, and reminds people that re-purposing old objects is an important part of the effort to reduce our overall waste.

The Re:Design Challenge is open to everyone. Professionals, children, students and amateurs can all enter by demonstrating how wasted materials can be used in useful and beautiful ways. We want to show how people can easily convert their old stuff into new and interesting items. Take old stuff, make new things and start a creative revolution that reduces the amount we throw away!
The launch event, called “Designing for the Future”, is a one-day fashion design boot camp for teams from local schools and colleges. Students will compete to design new outfits from one tonne of recycled clothing that has been supplied by the PDSA from their textile collecting banks and shops.
The Re:Design Challenge is supported by Southampton University’s Winchester School of Art. International designer Reem Alasadi – who is a Reader at the University of Southampton’s Winchester School of Art - will be judging the outfits, along with the Mayor of Winchester Cllr Angela Clear and PDSA Volunteering Development Manager Kit Lendon. Prizes will be awarded for the most creativity, for practicality and for the best team-working skills.
Winchester Fashion Week in April 2016 will include an exhibition of the shortlisted entries, with the winning outfits modelled as part of the glamorous annual catwalk show.
The Great Waste initiative is a joint venture with Winchester City Council and Winchester Action on Climate Change with a year of events and activities to help people reduce waste and increase recycling.
