Dog reunited with owner after a year
A stray dog found in the Winchester district has been reunited with her owner after a year – in Wiltshire.
Zulu, a 1 year old female brindle lurcher was found as a stray dog at Swanmore College on 13 October 2015, taken to a local veterinary surgery, and collected by Winchester City Council’s Animal Welfare Service that afternoon.
Zulu was microchipped,
explained Dave Griffiths, the Senior Animal Welfare Officer,
but was registered to a Devon address. I left a message on the telephone number given to say that we had found the dog. Some people pass dogs on and forget to update the microchip database so, as it was so far away, I wasn’t optimistic that we would locate the owner.
However, an excited owner rang the next day. Danny Allan, who now lives in Wiltshire, was heartbroken when thieves had broken down a garden fence and stolen Zulu when she was only 15 weeks old. He collected Zulu and showed Dave pictures of the two of them together when she was a puppy.

It shows the value of microchipping as an identification method and as a deterrent to dog thieves.
Owners are reminded that all dogs need to be microchipped by law as of 6 April 2016 and that the details held on the microchip database must be kept up to date.
