‘Substantial’ interest in Station Approach
Twenty-two expressions of interest have been received from architects in the first stage of a design competition to help Winchester City Council redevelop the Station Approach area of Winchester.
The Council is running the competition to choose a design team for the multi-million pound scheme which will see the area near the railway station transformed with new offices, parking, homes, public spaces and shops.
The deadline for initial expressions of interest passed on Wednesday (18 November). Submissions have been received from architects local and national, firms large and small.
Cllr Stephen Godfrey, the Leader of Winchester City Council, said:
We are delighted by this substantial level of interest in helping us bring much-needed improvements to Station Approach.
The scale and quality of submissions gives us confidence that we will be able to choose a design team who can deliver a scheme of which the city can be proud.
Now the submissions will be narrowed down by an expert panel supported by Tina Frost, an independent Client Adviser from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
A shortlist is expected to be compiled by the beginning of December and those firms will be invited to submit outline solutions for the area. There will be further discussions on the shortlisted schemes, leading to the submission of ‘best and final offers’ by the bidders. There will then be a public exhibition.
