Buy wisely on Black Friday and have a low-cost Christmas
Winchester’s Low Cost Christmas campaign advises shoppers to spend wisely this Christmas as online and high street retailers are gearing up for Black Friday on 27 November when UK shoppers are expected to spend £5 billion on discount Christmas gifts.
There are some wonderful bargains around and we want people to make the most of the great shopping in Winchester. But it is all too easy to overspend on things you don’t need in the heat of the moment when it looks like a bargain,” said Susie Phillips of The Great Waste Campaign. “It’s a shame to create unnecessary waste.
To prevent Black Friday craziness, savvy shoppers are urged to use these five simple tips to bag a bargain without waste.
Before you go out:
1. Decide what you want, make a list and stick to it. This will stop you getting carried away with impulse deals in the shops.
2. Research prices on the internet. This will help you spot a good deal from a bad one.
3. Decide how much you have to spend and stick with it no matter what.
4. Leave credit cards at home. Using cash only will help you stick to your limit and keep control.
5. And once you’re in the shops, always keep the receipt so that you can take things back if you did get carried away.

The Great Waste is a joint venture with Winchester City Council and Winchester Action on Climate Change with a year of events and activities to help people reduce waste and increase recycling.

We would always encourage people to shop locally and really enjoy the atmosphere. But for those on a budget, these are really sensible shopping rules for a happy and affordable Christmas.
