Help to tackle dog-fouling in Denmead
Winchester City Council’s animal welfare team is asking for the public’s continued help to tackle dog-fouling in Denmead.
Bere Road and surrounding areas have become a hotspot for dog-fouling in recent months and animal welfare officers, Dave Griffiths and May Carrington, have been trying to track down the owners who are responsible.
Thanks to the help and vigilance of local residents, an offence was witnessed and a fixed-penalty notice was served on a person who is thought to be a regular offender.
We carry out regular patrols throughout the District, but we are unlikely to witness an offence. That is why we rely on the help of the public,
explained Dave Griffiths.
Anyone who witnesses someone failing to clean up after their dog in a public place should make a note of the time, date, place and a description of the dog and owner plus any information that could help us to locate them. The residents of Denmead have been fantastic.
Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, failure to clean up after your dog in public is an offence and prosecution can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. If a dog fouls while straying, it is still an offence, as is cleaning up but leaving the bag of dog mess in a public place.
