The Great Waste and Trash to Treasure

Trash to Treasure is a free, fascinating and interactive exhibition of items from around the world made of waste and rubbish which runs until 19 April in Winchester Discovery Centre’s City Space.

At the launch on Friday 6 March, Deputy Mayor Cllr Angela Clear joined children from the Firefly theatre company under the direction of the Junk Orchestra to make music from instruments made of waste such as old cooking pots.

The music was loud, enthusiastic and really wonderful. It is amazing what you can make from things that look like waste,” said Susie Phillips, project manager for The Great Waste. Trash to Treasure is a project in The Great Waste initiative designed to help us all rethink waste, increase recycling and cut down what goes into our black bins.

Susie added:

Did you know Winchester households only recycle half of resources that they could? If we all did our bit, then the district could recycle a phenomenal 70% of resources putting us at the top of the league.

The Great Waste, from Winchester City Council and Winchester Action on Climate Change, has events and activities planned for the next 12 months all over the Winchester District that should appeal to everyone. These include Swap & Swish where people swap clothes and household items for free, Love Food Hate Waste events to try food and recipes and Re:Workshops where everyone can learn how to repair or upcycle so things don't get thrown away.

The Great Waste Team is keen to hear from local groups who would like to run their own event under The Great Waste banner. There are resource packs and support available. Visit the www.thegreatwaste.org.uk website to find out more.
